What do you do in Corfu when you want to go "somewhere else" for the day?

Well, you can hire a car or a bike, but that can be expensive, and if you're not adept on two wheels, perhaps a bit risky. You can walk, or you can take a taxi, if you are lucky enough to find one - they can be quite rare.

Alternatively, if you are lucky enough to be staying in Arillas, San Stefanos, San George, Sidari or Roda, you can be one of the first to try out a new local inter-resort bus service that will be trialed during August and September this year, and, if it proves successful will operate for the whole of the season from May to the end of October, 2012. The new service will operate as an inter-resort shuttle, with a bus every 20-25 minutes, running around in a circular route linking up the 5 main resorts of North West Corfu.

To use the service you will need to buy a "5 Resort Travel Pass", and these will be available to buy in all sorts of places including shops, hotels, travel agencies as well as through appointed holiday tour company representatives. Three types of pass will be available, valid for 1 day at 5 Euros, 7 days at 15 Euros or 14 days at 25 Euros. The pass entitles its holder to unlimited travel on the inter-resort service during the dates chosen as the valid period.

The new venture has been created by UK web-based company, Corfu Direct Travel Services (CorfuDirect.com), who practice a new style of ethical business (called Sustainable Local Business Modelling), the objective of which is to innovate new tourist ventures and to ensure that around 80% of the revenues generated through its enterprises remain to benefit the local economy of Corfu.

Corfu Direct provide innovation, project management and marketing expertise, then build joint ventures with local businesses and traders, who all share in the income generated. On average CorfuDirect retains only 10% of turnover, with the balance remaining to benefit the local economy.

So, if you are staying in North West Corfu this summer, we hope you will buy your 'ticket to ride' and help get this local project off to a flying (or should that be - a rolling?) start.
